Winterizing Maize

Christina and Jeff made the decision to plant Rye in succession to the maize growing in Boreum Hill and Canarsie. Rye is a grain commonly planted as a winter cover crop because it helps to maintain the soils health in a number of ways. It can also be grown until harvest and used in making bread, whiskey and various other consumables. This grain introduced by Europeans, who took possession of the Indian maizeland, is also representative of the various foreign grains that displaced the native maize that once grew in Brooklyn.
